From Fall 2004 through Spring 2006, Cannon was adjunct faculty at Whatcom Community College in Bellingham, Washington.  He taught music history and fundamental theory, and quickly proved a vitalizing force in the college's musical community.  Cannon and his colleague Charissa Chiaravalloti performed a benefit recital for Whatcom's music program in May 2005.  His various efforts were recognized in June 2006 as the recipient of the Faculty Excellence Award, the highest annual honor given to an instructor.

Classes taught at Whatcom Community College:
Music 100 - Music in the Western World  - seven quarters, Fall 2004 through Spring 2006
Music 101 - Fundamental Theory - six quarters, Fall 2004 through Spring 2006
Music 295 - A Brief History of Opera - honors seminar, Spring 2006

He has also taught at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he served as a graduate assistant for two years (2002–4).  In his first year, he assisted the undergraduate choral conducting course, and was also the assistant director of the University Chorale and Oratorio Chorus.  During his second year he was the instructor of the University Singers, assistant director of the Chamber Singers, and assisted the graduate-level choral conducting course.  He also instituted and supervised a major re-organization of the university's choral library holdings.
