Cannon's Canon
These pages are under construction.
These pages are an attempt to catalogue the
expanded central repertoire of "Western classical music". The works listed here are
often performed,
recorded, or studied, within their respective categories. For example, if a
work is central to the repertory of, say, tuba concertos, or late Romantic English choral anthems,
or Renaissance Spanish organ music,
the aim is to include it here. To that end, also included are
works somewhat less often performed today, but which were central to the
repertory at one time, or which are still generally held to be considerably influential
or otherwise important. Effort has also been made to include contemporary
works which, while history has yet to judge, have strong potential
to become lasting contributors to their respective genres.
Large bold type indicates an
item of major importance.
Bold type indicates an item of considerable
importance, which should be known by the well-rounded musician.
Regular type indicates an item of secondary importance, worthy of further
investigation.
Italic type indicates an item of lesser importance, of interest to those with
particular focus in the genre or historical era.
